Most teams treat AI visibility like an extension of SEO. “Let’s get our content in front of LLMs the same way we get it in front of Google.”
This is wrong. And it’s costing you visibility in both places.
LLM visibility and Google rankings are not the same game. They have overlapping surfaces but fundamentally different rules. You can optimize for one and hurt your odds in the other. You can optimize for both, but not by using the same playbook.
I see this constantly. A client will have strong Google rankings for their category and near-zero citations from Perplexity or Claude. Or they’ll be cited by every AI answer engine and struggle on Google.
The teams doing well in both understand that these are separate optimization targets. They require separate strategies, different content structures, and different measurement approaches.
The signal divergence: why Google and AI aren’t looking for the same thing
Let’s start with the core difference: Google is ranking pages. AI systems are extracting facts.
Google’s ranking signal stack
Google cares about:
- Authority (links, domain reputation, brand signals)
- Relevance (keywords, semantic match, topical coverage)
- User experience (Core Web Vitals, mobile optimization, click-through data)
- Freshness (recency for some queries, evergreen value for others)
- Engagement (implicit: traffic, dwell time, bounce rate)
These signals work well for ranking pages in a results list. They tell Google, “This page is trustworthy and matches what the user is asking for.”
LLM answer engine signal stack
AI systems care about:
- Specificity (Is the claim specific and directly relevant to the query?)
- Verifiability (Can this claim be cross-checked against other sources?)
- Structure (Is the information organized in a way the model can parse and attribute?)
- Recency (Is this current information?)
- Source clarity (Is it obvious where this information comes from?)
These signals work well for extracting reliable facts from pages. They tell the LLM, “This is a specific, verifiable claim from a source we can cite.”
Notice the overlap: freshness and recency appear in both. Relevance appears in different forms. But the core logic is different.
How the signal divergence plays out in practice
Here’s where the divergence gets real:
Content format: Google loves long-form comprehensive content. AI systems prefer focused, answer-first content.
A 4,000-word “ultimate guide to API authentication” will rank better on Google than a 800-word post titled “JWT vs OAuth: Quick Comparison.”
But that 800-word comparison post will get cited by Perplexity. The comprehensive guide will be cited less frequently because it’s harder for the AI system to extract the specific answer to the specific question.
This creates a dilemma: Do you write for Google (long, comprehensive) or for AI (short, focused)?
Authority weighting: Google weights domain authority heavily. AI systems weigh specificity more heavily.
A post on IBM’s blog about cloud databases will rank better than the same post on a startup’s blog, all else equal. Google trusts IBM’s brand more.
But if the startup’s post directly answers the specific query with concrete data and IBM’s post speaks more generally, Perplexity will cite the startup. It doesn’t care about IBM’s brand—it cares about answer quality.
This is why emerging brands can actually outcompete incumbents for AI visibility. You don’t need 20 years of SEO authority. You need specific, structured answers.
Keyword optimization: Google rewards keyword alignment in headings, meta, and content. AI systems don’t care about keyword matching.
If you’re optimizing a page for the keyword “API rate limiting,” Google wants to see that phrase in your H1, your meta description, and naturally throughout your content.
AI systems don’t care if you use the word “API” or “rate limiting” at all. They care if your content answers the query. You could answer “What are the constraints on concurrent requests?” without ever using the phrase “rate limit” and the AI will understand you’re answering the rate limit question.
This means your Google optimization and your AI optimization can actually fight each other. Over-optimizing keywords for Google can make your content less natural and harder for AI to parse.
Link signals: Google uses backlinks as a core ranking factor. AI systems don’t directly use links for citation decisions.
An established site will outrank a newer site on Google partly because it has more links. This is Google’s core logic.
AI systems don’t see links. They see content. A newer site with better content can become a primary citation source without a link profile.
This means your link-building strategy helps you on Google but doesn’t directly move your AI visibility needle. They’re separate problems.
The framework for dual optimization
You can win in both races. But you need a framework that treats them as separate games.
Layer 1: Diagnostic—measure each separately
Don’t assume your Google rankings correlate with AI visibility. Measure both:
- Google visibility: Track rankings, click-through rate, impressions for your key terms
- AI visibility: Run periodic Perplexity and ChatGPT queries on your topics. Track citation frequency. Use a tool like SEMrush’s AEO dashboard to monitor citations over time
You’ll probably find they don’t correlate strongly. A page might rank #3 on Google and never get cited by AI. Or vice versa.
Once you see the divergence, you can address it.
Layer 2: Content architecture—create different content for different engines
You don’t need to fork your entire content strategy. But your top pages should have dual optimization:
For Google optimization:
- Comprehensive, keyword-optimized heading structure
- Clear E-E-A-T signals (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness)
- Strong internal linking strategy with anchor text optimization
- Backlink targets with clear link-building strategy
For AI optimization:
- Answer-first structure (answer the specific query in first 200 words)
- Highly specific claims with concrete data
- Clear source attribution and citations within your content

These aren’t contradictory. A page can be comprehensive, keyword-optimized (Google) AND have a clear answer up front with specific data (AI). You’re just stacking the optimization layers.
Layer 3: Content segmentation—different content for different stages
Your content tree should have different purposes:
Tier 1: Comprehensive guides (Google first, AI secondary)
These are your 3,000-5,000 word guides on broad topics. They’re designed to rank on Google for head terms and capture topical authority. They’ll get some AI citations but aren’t optimized for it.
Example: “A Complete Guide to API Authentication Methods”
Tier 2: Focused answer posts (AI first, Google secondary)
These are 800-1,500 word posts answering specific, high-intent queries. They’re designed to get cited by AI systems and will rank on Google for narrow, specific terms.
Example: “JWT vs OAuth: Which Should You Use and Why?”
Tier 3: Documentation/specs (AI primary)
Your product docs, pricing pages, specification sheets. These aren’t designed for Google ranking but should be highly citable. AI systems will cite these more than any other content type.
Layer 4: Measurement—track the right metrics for each
For Google: Track rankings, impressions, CTR, organic traffic, conversions
For AI: Track citation frequency (manually or with tools), citation source diversity, citation context (are you being cited for the right claims?), reference traffic from AI (use UTM parameters to distinguish)
These metrics point in different directions. Your goal is to improve both, but you’ll be managing two separate dashboards.
The strategic implications: why this matters for your growth
Here’s what most teams miss: LLM visibility is not a replacement for Google visibility. It’s a new surface.
Right now, people still use Google more than AI answer engines. But that’s changing. In a year, in two years, AI answer engines will be the primary discovery mechanism for many queries. Teams that are already optimized for them will have massive advantage.
But this doesn’t mean abandoning Google optimization. It means adding a new layer.
The teams winning in both spaces are:
- Investing in comprehensive, specific content (both Tier 1 and Tier 2)
- Maintaining strong SEO fundamentals (links, authority, technical health)
- Layering in AI-specific optimization (structure, specificity, attribution)
- Measuring both surfaces separately and optimizing accordingly
This is more work than traditional SEO. But it’s also more defensible. When most of your competitors are still chasing Google rankings, you’re building visibility in the channel where the margin hasn’t compressed yet.
The divergence accelerates
As more people optimize for AI visibility, the optimization tactics will specialize even more. The signals Google and AI systems use will diverge further. The content types that work for each will become more distinct.
This is actually good news for you. It means there’s no single “perfect SEO strategy” anymore. It means there are multiple surfaces, each with distinct rules, each with real opportunities.
The teams that understand these differences—and can execute strategies that work in multiple channels simultaneously—will own the visibility game in 2026 and beyond.
That’s not just ranking on Google. That’s being in the answer. That’s where the real power is.
