AI did not kill SEO. It runs on it.
AI cannot quote a page it cannot find. So GEO runs on SEO, not around it. No foundation, no citation. You need both. We run both.
Your buyer asks AI now. Be the answer, or be nowhere.
The search still happens. The click now ends in the AI answer. If it does not name you, your buyer never sees you.
The job has not changed: be the answer your buyer sees. That answer lives in the AI box now, not just the blue links.
SEO and GEO are one job, not two.
Same web, same pages, read by two readers. One ranks you so you can be found. One quotes you once you are. The second cannot happen without the first: you cannot sit on page 100 of Google and get quoted by ChatGPT.
Getting your pages crawled, indexed and ranked in search engines like Google. It is the foundation an AI answer is built from.
Getting your pages cited and recommended in AI answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Also called AEO, answer engine optimization.
Being found gets you in the room. It does not get you quoted.
SEO earns you a seat at the answer. Whether the model actually names you is a second job, and most brands never do it.
The model knows you exist. It will not recommend you.
A 30-to-1 gap. Recognition is not recommendation, and recommendation is what wins the deal.
AI is built on the search index. No index, no answer.
This is not our take. It is what the engines document, and what every controlled study keeps finding.
No index, no answer
Google's own docs: its AI features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems," and a page must be indexed to appear at all.
The controlled test picked SEO
In a peer-reviewed benchmark, traditional SEO was "significantly more effective." Only 3 of 54 GEO-specific tactics moved the needle at all.
You cannot be quoted if you are not known
A model's recall of a fact scales with how much of the web mentions it. That web presence is the authority and links SEO builds.
Most AI crawlers cannot run your code
They fetch your pages but do not execute JavaScript. If your content or facts need rendering, the engine never sees them.
Authority predicts citations. Tricks do not.
Branded mentions and domain strength track AI visibility. On-page "GEO tactics" showed no correlation. The finding: build the SEO foundation first.
Schema alone will not save you
Structured data barely moved AI answers in testing, and Google states it "is not required" for generative results. Indexing and content did the work.
That is why GEO cannot be done without SEO. The engine can only quote what SEO made findable.
SEO gets you found. GEO gets you chosen.
The foundation is shared. The new work is turning a found page into the one the model names.
Be findable
What earns you into the index in the first place.
Be quotable
What turns a page the engine can read into the line it lifts.
Foundation without the layer, and you rank while rivals get quoted. The layer without the foundation, and there is nothing for the engine to quote.
We get you ranked on Google and recommended by AI.
Winning both is two disciplines that move every quarter, and one hire keeps up with one. J6 runs both together, senior-reviewed, so you rank in search and get named in the AI answer, from one team.
The same case in full: one in-house seat versus the whole desk.
One keyword. Ranked on Google, and recommended by every AI.
One keyword. Ranked, and recommended everywhere.
For the head term its buyers actually type, it does not just rank on Google. The AI engines now recommend it too, naming it in answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity. Ranked and recommended, in the same quarter, everywhere its buyer looks.
There is no clean GEO dashboard. Anyone selling one is guessing.
AI citations swing from day to day, and plenty of answers name no source at all. A tidy daily GEO score is a fiction. We track the inputs that actually move citations, and report what really changed, in plain English.
The objections, head on.
Isn't SEO dead?
No. The AI answer is assembled from the search index, and Google's own documentation says a page must be indexed to appear. SEO is not the old thing being replaced, it is the foundation the new thing stands on. What changed is that ranking is no longer the finish line, being quoted is.
Can't I just add schema or an llms.txt file and be done?
Markup helps at the margins, not at the mechanism. Structured data barely moved AI answers in controlled tests, and most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so anything that depends on rendering is invisible to them. There is no single file that substitutes for being crawlable, indexed and genuinely cited across the web.
Is GEO just a fad?
The click is already leaving: most US searches now end without one. Whether the engine is called ChatGPT today or something else in two years, the durable position is being the source it quotes. That is not a fad, it is where the demand is moving.
How is GEO actually different from SEO?
Same web, different reader. SEO earns the ranking that gets a page retrieved. GEO earns the quote once it is retrieved: writing built for extraction, entity clarity, presence in the off-site corpus each engine reads, and measurement against citations rather than positions. The foundation is shared, the work on top is new.
Can my current SEO agency do GEO?
Ask them two questions: how do you measure a citation, and how do you handle the fact that most ChatGPT runs cite nothing and the sources churn about 65% day to day. If they cannot answer, they are running last year's playbook and calling it GEO.
Where do these numbers come from?
Our GEO Playbook 2027, a 248-page book where every claim is traced to a primary source: arXiv, NeurIPS, Google's own documentation, Ahrefs, Pew and more. The weak or over-quoted numbers you see elsewhere are deliberately left off this page.
